Charity Water Sewing Ideas

So for our upcoming craft booth to raise money for Charity Water I have gathered some ideas of items we can make.
So far I've gone off my Homemade Holidays list but here are some other ideas
braided scarf

another t-shirt scarf, especially since tied dye is so easy and I have a dye kit dying to be used (lol)

Ok so I am currently on a scarf kick- could be that i just bought 4 yards of $1/yard fabric just screaming SCARF!! Scarf #3

So for now that's that. So far I've been making flowers like crazy, after 3 designs I found my favorite and made 6 of them today. LOVE IT!!!

Homemade Holiday Day 1

Day 1 of Homemade Holidays is complete and I think successful.

Six ladies showed up and we sewed,
cut,
ripped fabric for a mummy costume,
fed babies,
held babies,
ran after babies,
searched the internet for projects,
baked cookies,
ate Chick-fil-A,
ripped open seams,
laughed
and we were reminded that we are each wonderfully created by God.

Psalm 139:13-15

   you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
¹⁴ I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
   your works are wonderful,
   I know that full well.
¹⁵ My frame was not hidden from you
   when I was made in the secret place,

We're off next week but after that we're steady until Christmas!!

Ok so these are not the greatest pictures and I probably should have made him put more clothes on but here is Justin's lastest creation.
He took an old pair of jeans and turned them into a crop jacket.

He truly is an artist.

I am thinking I'll teach him to use the sewing machine this year. So far his creations are held together with duct tape, hand stitching and staples.

Not that I'm partial or anything but this kid is a genius when it comes to creating things: clothing, music whatever his mind thinks up!

I stepped out last Tuesday night and obeyed God by selling my creations at EASM's 2nd Annual Faces not Places Benefit Show.
I had 8 bags,
1 tank top,
2 Stupid Creatures,
a few coffee cozies,
crayon holder,
"House" child's bag,
and an apron (by Amanda).
All items are part of a line I have called 4 the Love of DETROIT

This really was a step of faith for me but oh so fun!
Now I am looking for new places to sell and new creations to make.
Did I mention all money made goes to inner-sity missions in Detroit, MI? Well, it does.

Pine Cone Bird Feeder

Vintage Sheet is not only about sewing but really it is about creating. I love to create. Sewing projects, nature projects, painting, hot gluing, stitching, cutting, sewing, just creating. I spent a bunch of yesterday outside making pine cone bird feeders.
It was simple, I used a butter knife and covered pine cones with all natural peanut butter and then rolled them in bird seed. I hung the cones from a few trees using hemp string . Now I wait to see if the influx* in birds this year will stop for a snack.

*I'm wondering is all this snow in the mid-eastern states is holding up the northern migration of birds? or is it the absence of our dog Fluff? either way we seem to have an influx in birds, any other southern noticing the same thing?

Homemade Goodies

My pictures aren't the greatest I've been forced to use my camera phone and it's well, a camera phone.

I wrapped all our Christmas Eve gifts with fabric. I sewed little bags and used square pieces to house all the goodies this year! I cut up an old velevt dress I have dragged all over the country with me, it was bought for Steve's college graduation in '98; it made great gift bags!
I made this purse for my mom.

This one for my niece.

And everyone got rice heat therapy bags and coffee cozies!

I am still working on Vaughan's quilt and I'm still debating my next project(s).

My Son's Sewing Ability

When Justin was little he was very creative. Justin is my 13-year old son.

Today music is his world. he can always be found with a guitar in his hand.

He owns three, an acoustic, electric and a bass. And is learning to play the piano and drums.

The other day he asked me, "When I was two what did you think I'd be when I grew up."

It really made me think.

"I knew you were creative. So I guess I see you as doing something with your natural God-given ability to create. Whether it be music, art or sewing."

Sewing? Yep.

When he was 7 he made this out of his old ski hat. It's a puppet. He used the top "ball" for the nose and he cut the ear flaps and made them into the movable mouth. A little hole on the inside of the hat allows fingers to move the mouth. A Sharpie makes great eyes and a wonderful smile!He has also made various other "costumes" to go with his one day music act. It is not uncommon for me to find thread and cut up jeans and fabric laying around the music room.

When he was 2 he wanted a skateboard, we lived a mile up a dirt road with no pavement in sight. When he didn't get one he took paper, tin foil for wheels and made his own!

Isn't it amazing how we are knit together before birth with the abilities we have.

Happily Frustrated

The machine is back up and running.
I needed sometime away from her and she needed a new, nice needle.
I have found that when I think it's a tension problem, it could very well be a new needle is needed; plus I swear she just needs a day off now and then and causing me problems is her way of saying,"Give me a break!!"

So now I am frustrated because the last 4 projects I have started have not turned out too well.
Yuk.
I will take some more time out from her.
It breaks my heart but it must be done, for the safely of the whole family.

When My Feet Look Like This...

...it means I'm sewing.

I can feel the foot pedal with my bare/sock foot so I always kick that shoe/slipper off!

My friend Kimie had given me homemade cloth napkins made from old sheets; I sewed my current favorite fabric across a bunch of them and have great fall/Thanksgiving napkins!

I cut 1 1/2" strips

Sewed them 1 1/2" up from the bottom of each napkin. I sewed two times around about 1/8" in from the edge and again about an 1/8" from the first seam.

On two different color napkins. This is simple anyone can do this.

I also made this Cat Dish Mat to match.

I figure the cats can't read so...

Yesterday 2 of my girlfriends came over to sew.

It was Elizabeth's second visit and Amanda's first.
They each brought their machine, Elizabeth a veteran sewer, Amanda made her first project ever and I somewhere in between.

Oh how glorious it was.
Girls, coffee, homemade pumpkin muffins, thanks Elizabeth, sewing and girlfriends!

The Studio

OK, so the first step in the new sewing room is complete and here are some pics. This is actually our garage, we put a wall up and used it as the Lego Room for years; the outside garage door still works and when opened it reveals a small storage area along the front.

The room sits off the entry way and kitchen, here is the view back toward the house. Please notice the ironing station on top of the 13-year old washer and dryer.
Under the table you'll see I keep all my fabric in trash bags, it's how it works for me! Here's the view of the sewing table. My My mom's machine sits at one end and my mom's rotary cutter at the other. The table is the old dining table of a high school friend of ours, his mom gave it to us early on in our marriage. The table against the wall is made of two large speakers Steve won't let me get rid of with one panel of a bi-fold door laid on top. I keep my thread, scissors and other stuff I need while sewing on this table.

Here's the view from the washer & dryer. Those are our hurricane shutters and the Lego table against the wall; we don't have a storage shed so for now this is where they live. Also the large striped blob is a little sofa I have for visitors or for me to sit and read a pattern or sewing book on!

Lastly, this is the view form where I sit. You'll notice another sewing machine in the back right, it's just missing the foot pedal. I hope to get it up and running for the days when "extries" come over to sew!

That's it, step one down and it has a long way to go; more lighting and some color onthe walls, a design board and who knows what else!

Well, I'm off to get ready for a sewing day with friends today, we gotta put this space to use!

Puppet Theatre Project

I had so much fun making this puppet theatre for my x-co worker's daughter. It was an interesting journey, here's how it went. When Julia was about to be born I saw a very basic puppet theatre in a thrift store; I snatched it up and decided to make my own. Well, it didn't turn out nearly as nice as I hoped and so this project got put on the back burner.

When I saw this post, I knew I had hit the jackpot!
So before her 1 year birthday Ms Julia got her own puppet theatre so big brother can perform all he wants!

I Love 2 Hour Projects

I am finding more and more that some small projects can be done in under 2 hours. Today, while making pancakes, I managed to make this:
Much like the crayon rolls I've made except that it's a tampon holder!

I had made one a while ago and finally got around to another one today. Still working out the closure, I've tried 2 different styles, any ideas??

Travel Purse Tutorial

Inspired by Sew, Mama, Sew! I am posting this tutorial.

This is my first attempt at a tutorial, I hope it makes sense and that you give it a try.

I call this a travel purse because I first made it to travel with. Small enough to stay out of the way of suitcases and seat belts, yet big enough to hold my cell phone, id's, debit card and ticket.

Since I have returned from my trip I haven't put this little gem away- it's great to keep slung across my body, being a mom always on the go all my stuff is there without the hassle of a bulky purse.

Supplies needed:
2 corresponding fabrics ( I use scraps or fat quarters)
thread
button
bias tape (optional- I don't use it)

this picture is the fabric for a purse and matching mini wallet, it's also a different fabric than the purse made below. The first three rows on your left are what you will have once all fabric is cut out.

STEP #1: CUT OUT YOUR FABRIC
Out of fabric #1 (outside fabric)
cut 1 rectangle 5" x 13" for the purse body
cut a 2 1/2" x 4' strip for the strap (you may need to cut several small 2 1/2" strips and sew them together to make it 4 foot long)

Fabric #2 (lining fabric)
cut 1 rectangle 5" x 13" fort he lining
cut 1 rectangle 1" x 7 1/2" for the loop closure
cut 1 rectangle 3 1/4" x 5" for the inside fabric

STEP #2 MAKE PURSE STRAP
Sew together any fabric to make the 2 1/2" x 4' piece of fabric.
Iron one side, the long way, about 1/4"
do the same with the other side
Fold in half and iron- see picture below

Sew down each side of the strap a little less than 1/4" form the edge
Iron strap nice and flat
Set strap aside
STEP #3 POCKET
Sew the bias tape across the top of the pocket, see pic below. If you want you can fold down the pocket fabric, eliminating the need for bias tape. I actually have found I prefer to fold the top of the pocket down and sew it like a hem, no more bias tape.

Fold the lining fabric in half lengthwise, right side together, and iron.

Sew pocket to the right side of lining fairly close to the bottom of the lining where it was ironed. I use a zig zap stitch around the 3 sides.

STEP #4 SEWING STRAPS ON AND OUTSIDE OF PURSE

Take your outside shell piece of fabric and fold it right sides together.

With the fabric fold at the bottom draw a line 3/4" from the top.

Moving left to right along the line you just drew: 3/4" from the right side draw a vertical line

keep moving right: another 3/4" draw a vertical line (please note in the picture I worked right to left but found I liked the strap better when I did the reverse)

Flip fabric and repeat.

with a razor or sharp scissors cut along the horizontal line between the two vertical lines you drew. See picture below.

With fabric folded right sides together sew along sides of purse.

Turn right sides out.

Fold over top of purse 3/4" so the hole you cut is on top. again your hole will be on the opposite side than this picture

Iron Take you completed strap and place it up through the holes you cut.

Pin.

Sew 1/4" from the top of purse, through the straps.

When you are done you will be able to flip the 3/4" section you ironed down along with the strap so the 3/4" seam is now inside the purse.

iron.

STEP #5 LINING

Lay your purse shell and lining next to each other.

Draw a line at the top of the lining piece (right sides together) so it is slightly shorter than the outside shell of the purse.

Fold on the line (so the line can't be seen) and iron.

Sew along sides of the lining
To this point you should have the outside of your purse, with the strap sewn and the inside lining.

STEP #6 LOOP CLOSURE AND LINING SEWN IN

Get your button and loop closure fabric out!

Sew your loop fabric in the same way you did your strap. Ironing long sides in a small amount and then iron in half.

Next iron your loop piece so it looks like picture below. No need to sew.

Next slip lining into outside purse shell. Note: wrong side of shell and wrong side of lining with match.

Place the loop piece at the back of the purse in between the lining and the shell. Use your button to determine the amount sticking out. see pic

Pin.

Pin lining the whole way around the purse.

Sew in the lining and the loop closure.

I suggest sewing on the inside of the purse.

Next, flip the loop closure over the top of the purse and use it to line up where your button will be.

Sew on the button.

Loop closed.

Viola!

Your purse in now complete.

New Book Find

I have stumbled across the most glorious book! It is called Material Obsession.
I have several quilts picked out to do from it but my first goal is to make new ones for the boys for Christmas.

Usually Friday is sewing day but do to a lack of housekeeping this week I can not have fun sewing while my house looks like a hurricane blew through. I guess it's time to buck up in that area and just do it!

This blog has kind of become a dumping ground for all the things I want to reference on the web pertaining to turning my small lot in the fringe of the burbs into a small self-sustaining farm.

A friend of mine recently started a new blog focused on her love of sewing.
She inspired me,
to do the same.

I started my family blog to keep a record of our lives.
I started this blog to keep track of my sewing projects. In my oh so great ADHD state of life, I chased a squirrel around at Vintage Sheet, but now I am going back to posting all things sewing here.

I've got some changes coming my way. In anticipation of those changes I have been lining up some projects.
One of the first is to finish, well start and then finish, my living room curtains.
Then there is the front computer station window. I am also hoping to paint the whole kitchen along with making the curtain.

Then the small window in the entryway. I have the fabric cut out and I have started some embroidery on it.

I can't believe I have lived in my house 5 years and still have windows without curtains.

That's my life!

Garden Update

These are the first batch of tomatoes from my plants. I have eaten several single ones as I've run off to work or on my way in the door. My plants are in pots lining the front door walkway! I just love having my garden in an area where I can enjoy it during my "normal" day.

Speaking of normal I really miss doing the home thing. The tending the house and yard, as well as sewing, baking and spending days cleaning and arranging. That is what I'd like my normal to be again.

Today I am not in that position.

My cucumbers are growing up a small incline made from a piece of vinyl lattice. Well,... sometime yesterday the lattice flipped over on top of my plants!!! Yikes! They still look healthy and I put everything back as it should be, now it's the wait.

Realizing how I had forgotten how much I love being outside in my garden, dirt under my nails, sweat running down my back.
Realizing how I miss handstiching curtains and how cleaning out my entryway is theraputic.

Settling in on James chapter 1 right now.
Also listening to a great new band: mewithoutYou.

What to Do with Smoked Salmon?

Smoked Salmon in Puff Pastry

1 pkg. (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened
1 egg
8 oz. smoked salmon
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
½ tsp dried oregano
¼ tsp dried basil
Dash of red pepper
Salt and black pepper to taste

1 sheet frozen puff pastry

Preheat oven to 350 F.

Mix cream cheese and egg until smooth. Flake salmon and fold in with remaining ingredients, except puff pastry. Cut pastry into2 x 2 inch squares. In the middle of each square lay 1 tbsp of the salmonmixture. Fold edges of pastry square in to center over salmon mixture.Bake at 350 F on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper until puffed andgolden brown, 20-25 minutes.
Makes 12 servings (appetizers)

My mom bought this one for a gift.

So I had a chance to spend time "crafting" and sewing and just being creative. Here is a photo tour of the new items:

Another of my flower designs

I made these out of the bottom of old jeans (reduce, reuse, recycle) The white strip went to a friends daughter for her birthday, with her name embroidered on the inside back; the green one went to my mom. They make great book bags for Bibles or reading clubs.

A sweet young lady named Anna turned 13 recently. We've known her since we moved here 7 years ago. I made this for her to carry her ipod in, in her purse. I see many teenagers with their ipods all tangled and mangled in their purses. Everything that could have gone wrong on this project- did!

That's it for now. I'm working on some burp cloths, onesies and 2 baby quilts. Which is where the challenge comes in, one friend is not finding out the baby's gender so I'm tossing around what I'll do. I wanted to make a quilt and am leaning toward a nursery rhyme theme- I figure this will be safe, plus it'll be my first color (not redwork) quilt!!

Finally here are the pictures of the first set of my cards.

All cards are $7.50, including shipping (larger quanity pricing available).
Each card is hand embroidered and unique.
Each card is blank on the inside and are 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches in size.
Custom designs available.

As stated earlier each card is hand embroidered on muslin or similar fabric. I used a canvas for Love is Patient and will incorporate that fabric more in the next batch.

After the design is done I hand tack then onto the cards.
Here's a photo of the inside of one of the cards. You can see the 4 corners tacked down.

A close up. The knots are small and do not get in the way of the card by any means. I've actually found that people like the inside too!

Back to the sketching board for new designs, this was just the begining.

I'm So Happy!

I've got to post some photos on this darn blog!
I dropped off 4 of my cards at a local handmade, consignment shop and within 3 hours, 3 of them had sold!!!
Praise God!
Now the remaining cards I still have in my possession need nicer envelopes!!
I'll be offering them for sale via this blog starting mid-week next week.

Owl Poem in Needlework Hung in President Coolidge's Vermont Home

A wise old owl lived in an oak;

The more he saw the less he spoke;

The less he spoke the more he heard.

Why can't we all be like that wise old bird?

After I complete the cards I'm working on I plan to stitch an owl with this underneath as a wall hanging. I can't wait! I've wanted to do an owl for quite some time!!

A note about President Coolidge, he is the only US President to be born on the 4th of July and it is said that the theme of the above poem, that of “seeing much, saying little,” could be considered an apt analogy to the president's personality.

Every Girls Needs a Good Apron

Here's a good spot for free apron patterns. I didn't find the pattern I wanted but since I have a bunch of old jeans I think I'll give a jean apron a try.

The apron I use the most is an old one from my grandmother and what I like best about it is that it covers my entire shirt. I'm not much of a cook but I love to bake and I usually make a mess of myself. Looks like I'll have to make my own pattern from my current apron.

Cottage Industry

I've been busy with my new project lately.

In an attempt to bring back personal snail mail; you know hand written notes. Well in that attempt I've made some stationary cards.

I decided to start with the fruit of the Spirit and other words from the Bible.

Below are the LOVE, perhaps a Valentine card or just a note to your sweetie, and the JOY, who doesn't need a little Joy brought to them in the dead of winter via a personal note!?

A blast from the past. This has always sat in my kitchen, a cross-stitch number I did when we were engaged.

And then on a personal note: this photo is yet another landmark in the changing of my world!

4 Generations of Embroidery

I realized, I know I'm a bit slow, that hand stiching and embroidery are not only in my blood, but I've always done some sort of it.

On Christmas day my gradmother, my mother and I all sat down for some stitching in my sewing room and we shared and talked baout our stiching/sewing past. Mainly I was interested in hearin gmy grandmother talk about her mother. My great grandmother was an incredible women; besides being a single mom of 9 kids 100 years ago, she was a prayer warior, a servant to anyone who came into her home and a sewer, and embroiderer to be exact. I was given an apron that she had made when she was in her 80's. She didn't have a sewing machine, so it was all hand stitched and the work was excellent. Flawless. She not only folded her corners and seams with perfection, she also added evenly spaced decor. We found humor when I tied the apron around my "waist" and asked, "What good did only a 1/2 apron do?"
My grandmother, who is 84, looked at me, smiled and said, "Well they wore them around their actual waist first of all, and if my mother could see you she would be speechless." (speechless is something not common amoung the women in my family) The I tied the apron around my actaul waist and I got it! It protects my cloths from all the places they get messy while tending my home, of course it also ages me by about 30 years!
What a cool day we had, sharing, talking, bonding.

Busy Days

We had a wonderful Christmas and I've really enjoyed my time off of work. Here's what I've been working on these last few days.

I think this will be a pillow or small bag.

An ornament for our tree.

I'm going to stitch this onto a card and mail it to my cousin in Alaska.

It's been fun! I'm not wanting ot go back to anything besides vacation.

Love This New Room

I've got the sewing bug. My new found space has inspired me!!
Here's what I've been busy doing.
This was the first project in the new room. A Christmas ornament. Love and peace didn't turn out so good and patience is still in the works.

I stayed up until midnight last night doing my first official redwork. Of course it was of a cat. I bought the pattern yesterday.

Then this morning I couldn't resist these cute Elf Shoes. Actually I only finished one - I know what I'm doing this afternoon!

Hodge Podge

Here's a vintage lamp I got from my mom. This picture isn't the greatest; what I like about the lamp is it's shade. It has a ballerina dress feel .

My niece and nephew are visiting from New Hampshire. I watched them for a little bit this afternoon. They are so good.

He's such a good boy, not one fuss!

My neice is so smart and a joy to be around!

I also got these new redwork transfers from Wal-mart for $1, although at this site they cost $1.50. I can't wait to try them out!

My new room is getting organized and turning more girly. I've covered the couch with 2 chenille bedspreads and a quilt with pink and other "girl" colors. Another chenille bedspread hangs over the back window, I'm also working on getting the shelves organized.
